Artist's Statement:

The concept of this painting is how we handle an extreme psychological catastrophe in our lives.  The hole in the middle of the painting is the catastrophe itself and the hole it cuts into our soul.  It's that emptiness that you feel inside of your chest when it hits.  The downed tree is everything that emotionally falls down around the episode.  Because this was a spiritually foundation damaging event, there is a lot of damage done.  That which you never thought could be destroyed, has fallen.  Things that we thought were important in our life, just don't matter anymore.

The mountain lion in the front represents your initial reaction - surprise, stern and grave concern.  The mountain lion in the back represents your secondary reaction - something awakens inside of you.  You look for answers.  You either collapse or you come-up with strength that you never realized that you had.  You have to decide from where you will get that strength.

In the background of the artwork is new growth, along with the debris which has fallen.  This symbolizes how you rebuild your life.  Will it be sturdy and strong - or will your rebuilding be careless and thoughtless?  How will you become stronger and learn from that which has passed?

From this extreme pain, some never recover: others have leaned to compose the "Symphony of the Soul."
